Ways to Score

Courtside in 60 Seconds

Green cards are good plays. Red cards are faults. The number on the card is how many points you score, or how many sips you take.

01

Draw Cards

Each player draws a hand of green and red cards from the deck.

02

Watch & Call

When a play on court matches your card, call it out and play it first.

03

Score or Drink

Points mode: score the value. Drinks mode: give or take that many sips.

04

Win It

Most points (or fewest sips) when the match ends wins.

Game Modes

Same deck, four completely different games. Every mode works for points or drinks with 2+ players.

V1

Play by Play

The classic mode. Each player draws 2 green and 2 red cards. Watch the match, and when a play on court matches a card in your hand, call it out and play it. You have to play your card even if it's negative. Multiple players can play cards on the same play, and that's what makes it fun because most plays have a give and take. After each play, draw a replacement of the same color so you always hold 2 green and 2 red. Most points at the end of the match wins.

PointsGreen cards add to your total. Red cards subtract. You must play both. Most points at end of match wins.
DrinksGreen cards = give that many sips to anyone. Red cards = you take that many sips yourself.
V2

Survivor

Every card you play scores, green or red. Start at zero. Deal each player 4 cards, any mix of colors. When court action matches a card in your hand, you must play it. Draw a replacement from the deck after each play. Play as many cards as you can and rack up the highest score. Player with the most points at the end of the match wins.

PointsEvery card played adds its value to your score regardless of color. Most cards and highest score wins.
DrinksEvery card played = take that many sips yourself. Green hurts just as much as red. Most cards played wins.
V3

Traditional Horses

The original courtside game, structured. Each watcher picks one player on the court. No two watchers can pick the same player. Deal 3 green and 3 red cards. You can only play a card when your chosen player does that action. If your player does something you don't have a card for, tough luck. Draw a replacement from the matching color pile after each play.

PointsGreen cards add, red cards subtract. Best net score at the end of the match wins. Negative scores are allowed. Drafting a dominant server is smart, but if they shank passes all day, your score tanks too.
DrinksGreen = give that many sips to anyone. Red = take that many sips yourself. Choose your player wisely.
V4

Hot Seat

Like Traditional Horses, but you're betting on the action. Each watcher picks a player on the court and draws a card, green or red. Before the rally, bet that your player will do what's on your card. If your horse does the action, you keep the points or give the sips. If they don't, you lose the points or take the sips. Think of it as a volleyball spin on the classic horse race card game.

PointsYour horse does the action: score the card value. Your horse doesn't: lose the card value. Highest score at the end of the match wins.
DrinksYour horse does the action: give that many sips to anyone. Your horse doesn't: take that many sips yourself.

Questions

Both. Same deck, you decide. In points mode, card values score points, which makes it great for all ages. In drinks mode, card values become sips. Full rules at playhorses.co/sand.
2 or more. All four game modes work with any group size. More players means more competition for the same cards.
Nope. Every card describes a specific, visible play like "Serve Into Net" or "Ace." If you can see the court, you can play.
Absolutely. The deck includes both rec-level plays and advanced plays you only see at the competitive level, like kong blocks, jump serve aces, and hand-set kills. One deck covers every level of play.
Every card has write-in lines at the bottom. Add your own plays, inside jokes, house rules, or anything specific to your group. Make the deck yours.
